market mafia

Happy Saturday Market Mafia!  The ever coveted weekend is here and now it’s time to hit the pavement and go exploring. What kind of fun do you have planned? Haven’t decided yet which market your crew should hit? Maybe The Saturday Market! at 81 Bay Brewing in South Tampa is just the ticket. Check out my below recommendations of places to visit before and after you #HitTheMarket.

1. Dough

Sure we normally start this off with a coffee recommendation (and yes they do serve java at Dough – including, but not limited to, a bacon-latte!) but I’m here to tell you about the goods. I mean the GOOD goods. Dough is infamously known in the Bay Area for their house-made doughnuts served up in their adorable, whimsical parlor. Nutella filled. S’mores flavored. Stuffed Birthday Cake themed. These are just a few of their mind-blowing flavors alongside traditional old-fashioned and glazed. Not in the mood for doughnuts, but have a morning sweet tooth that must be fed? Try their other menu items, like their handcrafted ice-cream, boozy milkshakes or an arsenal of mouth-watering pastries.

2. MacDill Marina

Of course most locals know that MacDill AFB is located on the Southernmost point of Tampa Bay. The base plays host annually to the super-exciting and absolutely FREE AirFest. This year the U.S. Navy Blue Angels are headlining on May 12 & 13th; so be sure to mark your calendars for a stellar weekend. What most locals may not know is that MacDill has its own marina that rents out water equipment by the hour or for the day. Paddle boards, pontoon boats, fishing gear and kayaks are all available to rent and at pretty reasonable rates! Get outdoors and get active on the water!!

3. Hula Bay

Soaking up the Florida sunshine is a great way to get your dose of vitamin D. You can also get your vitamin SEA with waterfront views and scrumptious eats and drinks at Hula Bay Club. Enjoy your Saturday “one wave at a time”…the Hula Bay way. Most everyday you can find live music entertainment  downstairs at Duke’s Retired Surfer’s Island Bar while you kick back and relax. Their menu has everything from garlic cheese boards to fresh local catches. Raise your mojitos to island living on the mainland. Aloha ya’ll.

4.  The Saturday Market! at 81 Bay Brewing Company

Market Mafia, you have arrived. 81 Bay Brewing Company was founded in 2016 by three native Floridians. In 2017, this local watering hole became the chosen venue for The Saturday Market! happening every 4th Saturday of the month, 12PM til 5PM. Hosted by Olivia’s Art & Classes The Saturday Market! now has over 30 vendors taking over the brewery – both inside and out. Shop local and drink local; an ideal Saturday afternoon.

5. Roux

Craving some Creole Nouvelle goodness? End your day with dinner at Roux! Being a New Orleans native, I’m extremely picky about my cajun cuisine outside of Louisiana. This place gets it right and hits the spot every time.  Between the French Quarter ambiance and amazing chef ensemble (ex. Rick “Ricky P” Parsons of the beloved St. Pete eatery Ricky P’s Creole Kitchen FKA Ricky P’s Orleans Bistro) you’ll dine here once, and you’ll surely come back for more. On Saturdays and Sundays in their beautiful bar area, they have happy hour specials like: $1 oysters, BOGO bloody marys and mimosas, and $5 frozen cocktails. If you’d rather a drink a tad more unique, I highly recommend a Pink Fairy. PS: Their gumbo is slap-ya-momma good!

Your favorite place in South Tampa not make this list? Let us know where it is in the comments below! As always, if you’re drinking the cocktails, be sure you have a designated driver. While out and about tag Market Mafia on Instagram with photos of your market adventures! #HitTheMarket
